Brake pads can sit on the shelf for a long time before they are installed on a new bike, especially if the factory doesn't ship them with the bike and expects the dealer to supply them from his inventory. Old pads tend to make a lot of noise and wear out quickly so you should check them carefully or have a mechanic you trust check them. He doesn't have to be a motorcycle mechanic to be able to tell if the pad is worn.
